Daniel Kramer Bob Dylan A Year and a Day book cover featuring Bob Dylan

About

Through a looking glass.

For one year and one day, photographer Daniel Kramer had extraordinary access to Bob Dylan at the precise moment Dylan was becoming something else.

From 1964 to 1965, Kramer photographed him in Woodstock and New York, in recording studios and concert halls, backstage and on the street. He was there for the Bringing It All Back Home sessions and album-cover shoot. He photographed Dylan with Joan Baez, caught him in quiet moments when no one seemed to be watching, and followed him through the controversial transition from acoustic folk hero to electric rock star.

What makes these photographs so compelling isn't simply who Dylan would become. It's that Kramer caught him while he was still becoming it.

Across more than 100 photographs, A Year and a Day gives us Dylan before the image completely hardened into iconography: funny, guarded, restless, working, performing, changing.

We know the Bob Dylan who came after. Kramer lets us look through the glass at the one in motion.
